Winter weather wisdom: Driving tips from the weather service for challenging conditions
Winter weather makes driving dangerous, contributing to more than 6,000 weather-related vehicle deaths and over 480,000 injuries each year. When traveling in snow or freezing rain, put safety first by reducing your speed. In temperatures near freezing, assume roads may be icy and adjust your driving accordingly. Watch for ice building up on power lines or tree branches, as it can cause them to snap and fall. If possible, avoid driving in these conditions. If you must travel, choose routes with fewer trees and power lines. Never touch a downed power line, and call 911 immediately if you encounter one. Here are more winter driving tips from the weather service:
Share your travel plans:
When traveling out of town during hazardous winter weather, let family or friends know your destination, planned route, and expected arrival time.
Prepare your vehicle:
Keep your gas tank full and stock your vehicle with essential winter supplies, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
Stay calm when stranded:
If you become stranded, stay calm. Notify someone of your situation and location. Do not try to walk to safety. Signal for help by tying a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror, and increase your visibility by turning on the dome light and flashers.
Be aware of snow plows:
Keep an eye out for snow plows and provide them with ample room to pass. Only overtake a plow when you have a clear view of the road ahead.
Check road conditions:
Before heading out, review the latest road conditions so you can make informed decisions about your travel plans.
