Fire crews are battling a wildfire spanning roughly 500 to 600 acres in the Daniel Boone National Forest as of Monday morning, according to public information officer Mary O’Malley.
Officials with the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area said Sunday that the blaze was threatening park infrastructure. By Monday morning, however, crews had contained about 20% of the fire and believe they can protect all at-risk structures, O’Malley said.
Around 9 p.m. Sunday, officials with the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area said crews were actively battling the fire and weighing a strategic burn to help contain it. As of Monday morning, crews have not carried out that burn and are waiting for the right conditions, O’Malley said.
Officials also noted the cause remains under investigation. The fire is burning adjacent to the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area.
O’Malley said the fire could potentially spread into the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area.
On Sunday night, the recreation area reported that some park facilities had closed due to fire activity along Alum Road, also known as State Highway 700. Officials expected additional road and trail closures near Alum Road and the Yahoo Falls area.
The fire was discovered at 11:22 a.m. Sunday, according to the Western Fire Chiefs Association.
O’Malley said this was being investigated as human-caused.
