EUGENE, Ore. — Police in Eugene have arrested two suspects following an alleged racially motivated assault that left a man hospitalized late Wednesday night.
According to the Eugene Police Department, officers responded to a report of an attack near Willakenzie Road around 11:43 p.m. on April 15. When authorities arrived, they found a man in his 40s suffering from head injuries after being assaulted during his evening walk.
Investigators say the attack appeared to be unprovoked, and the suspects allegedly used a racial slur during the incident, prompting authorities to classify the case as a bias-related crime.
The suspects had fled the scene before officers arrived, but both were later located and taken into custody. One of the suspects, identified as 23-year-old Kody James Paz, faces multiple charges, including second-degree assault, third-degree assault, and first-degree bias crime.
A second suspect, a 13-year-old juvenile, has also been charged with third-degree assault and first-degree bias crime.
Emergency responders transported the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been publicly disclosed.
Police continue to investigate the incident and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
