A La Plata man is facing many counts after authorities say he caused a commotion at a local motel while intoxicated and repeatedly ignored law enforcement directives.

David Andrew Wathen, 44, of La Plata, Maryland, was arrested on April 18, 2026, following the incident at a motel on Crain Highway, according to court records.

Deputies responded about 10:52 p.m. to a complaint of a disturbance at the institution. Officers arrived and heard a man ranting, and a neighboring renter informed them that the disturbance was caused by an alcoholic individual who was generating ongoing problems in the area.

According to the probable cause statement, Wathen had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and a strong alcohol odor. Investigators claim he acknowledged to drinking earlier in the evening and was still arguing and following another person around the premises.

Officers originally warned Wathen and told him to stop ranting and create a disturbance. However, authorities claim he repeated the activity, prompting other complaints from motel patrons.

Wathen was arrested when deputies spotted him ranting and arguing again.

Wathen faces charges of failing to obey a reasonable and lawful order, disorderly conduct, and inebriated public disturbance.

He was released on his own recognizance after his arrest.

Under Maryland law, failing to obey a valid order and disorderly conduct are both punishable by up to 60 days in jail and/or a $500 fine, while intoxicated public disturbance is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a $100 fine.

A hearing is scheduled for June 2, 2026, in Charles District Court.
