An Ohio man who survived a devastating Fourth of July parade accident recently won the $500K Ohio Lottery prize.
Due to privacy concerns, the individual is only being identified by his first name, Duane. He is a Fremont, Ohio resident who bought a scratch-off ticket after work.
According to the Ohio Lottery, the player began disclosing symbols from the top of the ticket until unexpectedly discovering the game’s $500,000 top prize.
“I looked at it for a long time,” Duane said in a statement issued by lottery authorities. “At first, I thought something was wrong.”
The winner stated that after realizing the prize was legitimate, he put the ticket in a safe.
Lottery officials confirmed that Duane and his 18-month-old daughter were seriously injured during a Fourth of July parade mishap after being hit by an antique tow truck. The tragedy, which occurred over ten years ago, gravely injured several other onlookers.
The accident resulted in repeated heart attacks, the loss of his employment, and serious financial difficulties for the family, according to the Ohio Lottery.
Despite the obstacles, Duane said he always considered himself fortunate since he and his daughter lived.
He stated that so many individuals have assisted him over the years that he is looking forward to finally being able to repay the favor.
After paying 26.75% in federal and state taxes, the individual will get approximately $366,000. Online lotteries generated between $120 billion and $127 billion in revenue globally, although these statistics do not account for the huge number of lottery sites and gaming sites that contain lottery draws that are not necessarily licensed by a specific state.
While Ohio does not have an online lottery, neighboring Illinois generated $702 million in online lottery purchases last year alone.
