Two Baltimore men were sentenced for their roles in multiple carjackings that happened in June 2022, one of which resulted in a death, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.
U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar sentenced 24-year-old Jerritt Barron to 40 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Jeremy Matheny, 27, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for an attempted carjacking that resulted in death.
Barron and Matheny, along with co-conspirators Nefertiti Moore, 23, and Antonio Purisima, 25, both from Baltimore, planned many armed carjackings, according to court filings.
On June 15, 2022, Barron, Matheny, and Purisima followed a victim from Maryland Live! Casino to her Glen Burnie residence.
Two co-conspirators then approached the victim, brandishing weapons and demanding cash and her car keys.
The two masked suspects fled in the victim’s car, which was found less than an hour later in Baltimore, according to investigators.
As part of the investigation, law enforcement agents extracted fingerprints from the victim’s carjacked vehicle that matched Matheny and Purisima.
Additionally, cell data placed Matheny and Purisima at Maryland Live! Casino and the location of the carjacking.
On June 19, 2022, Barron, Matheny, and Purisima, along with Moore, attempted to carjack a vehicle near an I-95 ramp in Baltimore. The victim was shot and eventually died of his injuries.
On June 22, police detained Matheny and took a cellphone from his hands.
The search of the phone revealed photos of Barron, Matheny, and Purisima posing with guns at Maryland Live! Casino.
The casino’s video footage showed them entering a car and then following the victim as she drove it.
Purisima pleaded guilty on April 15, and his sentencing is set for July 28 at 2 p.m. He is facing a maximum of life in federal prison for carjacking that resulted in death.
