A Texas man who smuggled four undocumented migrants into the country unlawfully in Tucson more than two years ago has been sentenced to more than four years in jail, authorities reported Wednesday.
Moises Gabriel Castillo Jr., 40, was sentenced to 57 months in prison last week, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
He previously pled guilty to illegally carrying people in the country for profit, which resulted in death and serious bodily injury, according to authorities.
One of the undocumented migrants died in a crash in Tucson
The charge stems from a July 24, 2024 mishap on Interstate 10 near Rita Road in Tucson, where prosecutors allege he caused a collision between the commercial semi-truck he was driving and another car.
Castillo was transporting migrants who paid to be smuggled into the United States, and one of them was ejected after the crash and died of their injuries, according to prosecutors.
The crash resulted in serious injuries to two other passengers, one of whom was 16 years old.
Castillo later testified to prosecutors that he anticipated to be paid for carrying them.
