Suspected Meth Dealer’s Toilet Flush Backfires As Deputies Seize $46K In Hernando County Raid

When narcotics detectives forced their way through the front door of a Gloria Avenue residence on Friday, Nehemiah Mason was already in the bathroom, desperately attempting to flush his methamphetamine supply down the toilet.

His efforts proved futile.

Deputies apprehended the 36-year-old as he stepped out of a guest bedroom, just feet from a bathroom counter coated with crystal-like shards, empty baggies strewn across the floor, and more than $46,000 in bundled drug proceeds concealed in the adjacent bedroom.

The raid concluded months of undercover investigative work targeting Mason, whom Hernando County detectives had identified as a major supplier distributing methamphetamine throughout the county. Undercover officers had arranged multiple controlled purchases directly from Mason over the course of several months, progressively acquiring larger, trafficking-level quantities. On at least one occasion, detectives observed Mason’s girlfriend, 32-year-old Brenda Rogero Diaz, drive him directly to a delivery point and remain behind the wheel while he completed the transaction.

When detectives from the Vice and Narcotics and Special Intelligence units arrived at the couple’s residence at 3071 Gloria Ave. with a search warrant on October 30, they announced their presence and demanded entry. Receiving no response, the breach team forced their way through the front door.

Both Mason and Diaz surrendered without resistance. However, the scene inside reflected a frantic and hurried scramble.

Adjacent to the toilet and along the guest bathroom counter, detectives discovered substantial quantities of methamphetamine. Within the bedroom, investigators recovered thick bundles of currency, including two separate rubber-banded stacks containing approximately $20,000 each.

A systematic search of each room produced bags of white powder and rock substances later identified as cocaine and crack cocaine, along with two prescription syrup bottles containing purple promethazine and codeine solution.

In total, deputies removed nearly 4.4 pounds of illicit narcotics and $46,327 in cash from the residence. The seizure included approximately 3.5 pounds (1,594.6 grams) of methamphetamine, nearly one pound (386.3 grams) of cocaine and crack cocaine, and 382.9 grams of codeine syrup.

Following his arrest and Miranda advisement, Mason spoke openly with investigators.

He admitted that the entire cache belonged to him, confessing that he was actively selling the methamphetamine and cocaine while reserving the codeine for personal use. He explained that the $46,327 recovered from the bedroom represented personal savings accumulated through prior drug transactions. He also acknowledged the disorder near the toilet, admitting that he panicked and attempted to flush the methamphetamine the moment he heard law enforcement striking the front door.

Mason informed investigators that Diaz was aware of his drug activity, though he maintained that she played no active role in conducting the operation. Diaz, who also waived her rights prior to being interviewed, confirmed that she had long been aware that Mason was storing and selling narcotics directly from their shared residence.

Both individuals were subsequently transported to the Hernando County Detention Center.

Mason faces an extensive list of felony charges, including three counts of methamphetamine trafficking, trafficking in cocaine, trafficking in codeine, four counts of maintaining a residence for drug trafficking, tampering with evidence, two counts of selling methamphetamine, two counts of possession with intent to sell, and three counts of unlawful use of a two-way communication device.

Diaz was booked on charges of principal to trafficking in methamphetamine and maintaining a structure for drug trafficking.
