A woman remains hospitalized following what police described as an unprovoked stabbing in Old Town early Sunday morning.
“It truly was just completely random and out of the ordinary,” remarked Daniel Harrell.
His cousin Kayla Harrell went out in Old Town on Saturday night to celebrate a friend’s birthday.
Daniel reported that around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, as they were waiting to go home on NW 6th Avenue near Flanders Street, a woman approached Kayla.
Daniel stated that when his cousin spoke to the woman, the unimaginable happened.
“She said that she had punched her in the chest, but what actually happened is that she had been stabbed in the chest,” Daniel said. “And then quickly after that she was stabbed in the neck and then the shoulder.”
The Portland Police Bureau reports that when officers arrived, they discovered Kayla with many stab wounds and bystanders attempting to assist her.
Officers assisted Kayla until paramedics arrived and transported her to the hospital.
Kayla has been intubated, required a blood transfusion, and undergone two operations since the incident, according to Daniel.
“Her chest cavity, her thoracic cavity, started to fill up with blood, and that is what had collapsed her lung,” Daniel remarked.
Police say security officers were able to apprehend the suspect, 36-year-old Achillia A. Palmer. She is facing multiple counts, including attempted murder and unauthorized use of a firearm.
Court records reveal that she has a history of alleged violence dating back to 2011.
“This is something you cannot do to others. But she wouldn’t want any damage to come to that individual,” Daniel explained.
Kayla, according to Daniel, has dedicated her life to helping people as a behavioral technician, and she is grateful that people were there to assist her during this awful incident.
“She can’t stress enough just how wildly grateful she is to everyone that played a part in helping her literally survive that night,” Daniel added.
Palmer is set to appear in court on June 30.
Daniel stated that his cousin has a long road to recovery and is expected to be in the hospital for several weeks.
They’ve set up a contribution site to help her through this terrible period.
