A protest in downtown Eugene on Feb. 28 resulted in injuries to both a pedestrian and a driver after a confrontation in the street, according to the Eugene Police Department.
Police said officers responded around 8 p.m. to reports of a large group blocking the roadway near 6th Avenue and Pearl Street.
Vehicle Surrounded, Man Falls From Hood
At approximately 6 p.m., the driver of a black SUV attempted to slowly pass through the crowd when individuals began striking the vehicle, police said. The driver accelerated in an effort to leave the area.
During the incident, a person climbed onto the hood of the SUV and began hitting and damaging the windshield before falling off the vehicle.
The pedestrian was identified as 19-year-old Shane Alexander Novak of Pflugerville, Texas. He was treated at the scene and transported by Eugene Springfield Fire to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Novak was issued criminal citations for second-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
Driver Also Injured
The driver, a Eugene woman in her 30s, suffered facial injuries after being struck while her window was down. She was evaluated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Police said there were also reports of damage to other vehicles during the protest.
The case remains under investigation.
