Eugene and Portland Gay Men’s Choruses unite for ‘Legacies’ concerts celebrating LGBTQ+ history and resilience

On This Post

A powerful new concert series in Eugene and Beaverton will spotlight LGBTQ+ history, identity, and resilience through music.

The upcoming “Legacies” performances bring together the Eugene Gay Men’s Chorus and the  Portland Gay Men’s Chorus in a collaborative effort to honor decades of LGBTQ+ culture and activism.

Both groups are part of GALA Choruses, a global network of LGBTQ+ choirs that has played a key role in community building and advocacy since the 1970s. The concerts will feature music commissioned throughout GALA’s history, reflecting important moments and voices within the LGBTQ+ movement.

Members say the performances go beyond music, serving as a form of expression and activism. Longtime chorus participant Sam Sappington described singing in a gay choir as a meaningful way to inspire change and connect with others.

Artistic leaders also emphasize the historical significance of the collaboration. Braeden Ayres noted that many people are unaware of the long legacy of LGBTQ+ choral groups, while Evan Miles said combining both ensembles allows performers to fully experience the impact of these works.

Participants highlight the chorus as a welcoming and inclusive space for people of diverse backgrounds. Members say the group fosters a sense of belonging, often becoming a “chosen family” for those involved.

The concert series will kick off on March 21 in Eugene, followed by additional performances on March 28 and March 29 at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts.
