The Eugene Family YMCA is exploring plans for two major projects, including expanding its South Eugene property and opening a new facility in North Eugene.
North Eugene Location Options
CEO Brian Steffen said the organization is considering two potential sites in the Santa Clara area along River Road:
- A property near Hunsaker Lane previously owned by LTD
- A second site near Madison Middle School in partnership with the City of Eugene
Plans for the LTD site are currently on hold due to building restrictions limiting construction to 18,000 square feet, far smaller than the YMCA’s preferred size.
For comparison, the existing facility on 24th Street spans about 75,000 square feet.
South Eugene Expansion Plans
The YMCA is also gathering feedback on how to develop its former site on Patterson Street in Eugene, where its old building was demolished in 2024.
The current YMCA facility, opened in December 2023, has already attracted more than 19,000 members, driving demand for additional space.
Focus on Childcare and Community Needs
A key priority for the Patterson project is expanding childcare services.
Proposed plans include:
- Four large multi-purpose rooms for licensed childcare programs
- Space for group fitness classes, which are currently over capacity
- Potential areas for community gatherings and classrooms
Cost Considerations and Timeline
To keep costs manageable, the YMCA does not plan to modify the existing tennis and pickleball facilities.
The community survey will remain open until March 26. After gathering feedback:
- A donor feasibility study will be conducted
- The board is expected to review options in summer
- Fundraising efforts could begin in the fall
