Eugene Public Library is expanding its free student public librarycard program to include all K–12 students in the Bethel School District.
The initiative follows a similar program launched in 2024 for students in Eugene School District 4J. Under the expansion, about 4,800 Bethel students will automatically receive library cards through their schools.
Library Director Angela Ocaña said the program helps remove barriers that prevent some students from accessing library resources.
Officials say school visits to the library have already shown increased participation from children who now have library cards. The program also encourages families to visit the library together for the first time.
Ocaña noted that providing cards through schools helps address inequities among students, particularly when some children previously could not check out materials due to not having a card.
Through the program, students can borrow books and items from the library’s “Library of Things,” as well as access digital services such as online resources, movie streaming and live homework help.
Library cards will be issued to new students each year and automatically renewed for returning students. The Bethel School District is contributing $2,000 annually to help support the program.
