Lane County Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic Closes After Nearly Two Decades

On This Post

EUGENE, Ore. — A longtime low-cost veterinary resource in Lane County has officially shut its doors, leaving a gap in affordable pet care services for the community.

The Willamette Animal Guild (WAG), which provided discounted spay and neuter services in the Eugene-Springfield area, has permanently closed after 18 years of operation.

Closure Linked to Leadership Challenges

In a statement, WAG’s board of directors said the decision to close came after its longtime president stepped down due to serious health issues.

Without a suitable replacement to lead the organization, the board determined it could no longer continue operations.

“It is with great sadness… that we must announce the closure of our low-cost spay/neuter clinic, effective immediately,” the board said.

 Community Impact and Concerns

Local veterinarians say the loss will be felt across the region, particularly among pet owners who rely on affordable services.

Andria Saxon, owner of Pawsitive Wellness Veterinary Care, emphasized the importance of accessible care.

She noted that not all pet owners can afford standard veterinary rates, making low-cost clinics essential for responsible pet ownership and controlling animal populations.

Fewer Options May Lead to Longer Wait Times

While other affordable clinics remain in the area, experts warn that reduced availability could create delays for pet services.

Two alternative providers include:

  • Spay & Neuter Clinic
  • Main Street Spay Neuter

However, Saxon explained that having multiple options helps pet owners access care more quickly.

With fewer clinics available, wait times for procedures like spaying and neutering are expected to increase.

Refunds for Scheduled Procedures

WAG officials said they are currently working to refund clients who had upcoming appointments scheduled before the closure.

A Legacy of Affordable Pet Care

For nearly two decades, the Willamette Animal Guild played a key role in reducing pet overpopulation in Lane County by offering budget-friendly services.

Although the organization has closed, officials say they are encouraged to see other low-cost clinics continuing to serve the community.
