A routine traffic stop in the early hours of Tuesday morning resulted in multiple felony drug charges against a Haines City man, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy initiated a traffic stop on a blue 2008 Mazda 3 at approximately 12:12 a.m. along U.S. 17/92 at Orange Street after observing that the vehicle was operating with inoperable lights.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy identified the driver as 29-year-old Christopher Wayne Wendland. During the initial interaction, Wendland informed the deputy that he did not possess a valid driver’s license, stating that his Tennessee license had been suspended and that he carried only a Florida identification card.
The deputy proceeded to ask Wendland whether any illegal narcotics were present inside the Mazda. Wendland initially responded, “There shouldn’t be,” before ultimately admitting to the deputy that drugs were in fact located inside the vehicle.
