Residents in Eugene-Springfield are raising concerns as gas prices across Oregon continue to climb, affecting daily commutes and household budgets.
According to AAA, the average gas price in Oregon has reached about $4.18 per gallon, increasing nearly 20 cents in the past week and roughly 70 cents compared with last month. Nationwide, the average price is around $3.45 per gallon, the highest level since August 2024.
Experts say the price surge is tied to disruptions in global oil trade caused by the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The situation has affected shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage that previously handled about 20 million barrels of crude oil each day.
Many local residents say the higher prices are putting pressure on their finances. Heather McMahon said rising fuel costs are already impacting everyday expenses for commuters who rely on driving to work.
Others say they have noticed the increase but are still trying to adapt. Erik Verdouw said higher fuel prices could eventually place additional strain on the broader economy.
Some visitors have also adjusted their travel habits. Joseph Dodds said the rising costs have made him consider working from home more often instead of commuting.
Fuel price tracking services and analysts say prices could continue to rise if tensions in the Middle East persist.
