Lane Community College board approves tuition increase, budget mitigation plan

On This Post

The governing board of Lane Community College has approved a financial mitigation plan that could include millions of dollars in cuts as the school prepares for projected budget deficits.

During a Wednesday meeting, the Lane Community College Board of Education voted 4–3 to adopt a plan that could reduce spending by up to $4.4 million. The proposal may include reductions in staff and academic programs, though specific details are expected at a future meeting.

Board member Steve Mital said approving the plan now could help avoid deeper cuts later.

The board also approved a 1.2% tuition increase, raising the cost to $151 per credit hour. That amounts to a $2-per-credit increase and is expected to generate about $400,000 in additional revenue for the college.

Several board members opposed the mitigation plan, including board chair Austin Fölnagy, vice-chair Jerry Rust and board member Zach Mulholland, who raised concerns about the potential impact on students and employees.

Board member Julie Weismann supported the modest tuition increase but cautioned against relying too heavily on students to cover the institution’s financial challenges.

College leaders said the school is beginning preparations for its 2027 budget process next month. The board also ratified a new contract with classified employees and is continuing negotiations on a faculty contract.
